NEW RELEASE

An English Violin
Geneviève Laurenceau · Orchestre de Picardie
David Niemann, conductor
NoMadMusic · 2026

I am a conductor based in Berlin, working across the symphonic, operatic and contemporary repertoire.

A central project of my 2026/27 season is a new production of Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, where I will conduct the complete ballet in a new choreography by Gregor Zöllig. Performances run from October 2026 through January 2027, alongside New Year’s concerts with the Staatsorchester Braunschweig.

Earlier this year, NoMadMusic released An English Violin, recorded with violinist Geneviève Laurenceau and the Orchestre de Picardie. At the heart of the album is Guirne Creith’s remarkable and rarely performed Violin Concerto in G minor.

Recent seasons have also brought collaborations with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Ensemble Modern at the Musikfest Berlin, the Orchestre de Picardie and the Orchestre national Montpellier.

My work spans the core orchestral repertoire as well as music of the 20th and 21st centuries – with a particular interest in bringing clarity, intensity and a strong sense of dramatic narrative to the music I conduct.

Warm regards,

David

"As the final bars ebbed away, Niemann holding the ensuing silence for such a long time that it became a part of the music, there was a definite feeling that that the audience had just been in the presence of something significant, something special." bachtrack.com

"The musicians of Ensemble Modern, under the unassumingly clear guidance of conductor David Niemann, tackled her scores with easy rhythmic precision and cheerful melodic exuberance."

Financial Times

"Under conductor David Niemann, the orchestra played Bruckner's sixth symphony with such a natural flow, that I rarely heard anything like it." Helsingborgs Dagblad

"It was a triumph of superb music-making, conducted by the young German conductor, David Niemann." Edinburgh Music Review

Biography

David Niemann is one of the most compelling conductors of his generation, known for his vivid interpretations, keen musical intelligence, and curiosity. Equally at home with symphonic masterworks and cutting-edge contemporary repertoire, he brings a fresh, probing perspective to the score.

Niemann has led acclaimed performances with orchestras such as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Belgian National Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, DSO Berlin, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Picardie, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and many others. Furthermore he conducted premieres and performances at some of the most important theatres like Wiener Staatsoper, Staatsoper Hannover, Salzburger Festspiele, Opéra National Montpellier and Malmö Opera.

From 2015-18 he served as assistant conductor to Michael Schønwandt at the Opéra National Montpellier.

David enjoys a fruitful relationship with Ensemble Modern, with which he conducted concerts at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Musikfest Berlin, at the musica festival in Strasbourg, steirischer Herbst in Graz and at the Ernst von Siemens award ceremony in Munich, performing works by composers like Tania León, Olga Neuwirth, Mauricio Kagel, Mirela Ivicevic and others.

Their recording of Klaus Ospald's "The double mingles of elements" was awarded the German Record Critics' Award.

Initially a passionate violinist, David commenced his conducting studies in 2007 as a pre-student at the Folkwang University of his hometown of Essen with David de Villiers and continued his studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Leif Segerstam, at the Dutch National Masters of Conducting programme with Ed Spanjaard and Jac van Steen, in addition to the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg with Ulrich Windfuhr and holds a Master’s degree from those last two institutions.
